Studio

Martin Associates Architects traces its origins to 1977, when John Martin established the practice in Houston, Texas shortly after receiving his architectural license while completing his undergraduate studies. From its earliest days the firm earned acclaim and awards for designs that respected context, craft and client priorities. Over the following decades the studio completed projects across Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Texas, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Louisiana. In 1989 John relocated the firm and his family to northwest Connecticut, establishing a sustained, highly awarded office in Torrington that remains the firm’s eastern hub.

Kieran Martin’s upbringing in an architect’s household fostered a lifelong commitment to drawing, sculpture and painting that later translated into architecture. After earning his graduate degree and licensure, Kieran practiced in Boston, New York City, Carmel (California) and Silicon Valley. In 2019 he founded an independent practice in Monterey, delivering residential and commercial work across California’s central coast.

In 2025 the two practices reunited, creating a father-and-son practice grounded in thoughtful, human-centered architecture and planning. The combined firm emphasizes listening, clarity and collaborative problem solving. We reject signature stylistic agendas in favor of needs-based solutions tailored to clients’ objectives, site conditions and programs. Trust between client and studio is the foundation of our work—each project begins with careful listening and disciplined interpretation so that design follows intent, not ego.

Martin Associates Architects brings decades of award-winning experience across scales and typologies. Our practice offers bespoke residential design, adaptive reuse, community- and client-focused commercial work, and strategic planning services. Whether working on an intimate renovation or a complex civic project, the studio’s approach remains consistent: attentive client engagement, rigorous analysis, thoughtful materiality, and resolved, appropriate solutions that support how people live, work and gather.
